Understanding DIM Weight & Packaging

Carriers charge based on whichever is greater: the package's actual weight or its dimensional (DIM) weight. Choosing the right size box is one of the fastest ways to reduce shipping costs without changing carriers.

How DIM Weight is Calculated

DIM weight = ceil(L × W × H ÷ divisor), where the divisor varies by carrier. USPS and DHL use 166; UPS, FedEx, and Amazon FBA use 139. A lower divisor means carriers charge more aggressively for large, light packages.

Right-Sizing Your Packaging

Oversized boxes inflate DIM weight and cost more to ship. If your box has more than 30% empty space, moving to a smaller box (or a closer-fitting corrugated size) will likely lower your billable weight. Add dunnage to protect the product rather than padding the box dimensions.

USPS Flat Rate: When It Wins

USPS flat-rate boxes charge a fixed price regardless of weight (up to 70 lbs). If your DIM or actual weight would push a package above the flat-rate price on another service, flat rate can be significantly cheaper — especially for dense, heavy items shipped short distances.

How Nventory Helps

Nventory auto-selects the cheapest carrier and box configuration for every outbound shipment, compares live DIM-adjusted rates, and tracks which SKUs are driving unnecessary DIM weight charges across your catalog.

It calculates dimensional weight across major carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon FBA), compares standard box sizes, and identifies the most cost-effective packaging option for your product dimensions.

Enter your package length, width, height, and actual weight. The tool calculates DIM weight for each carrier, compares it to actual weight, and shows which weight the carrier will bill. It also suggests standard box sizes that fit your product.

Yes. All DIM weight calculations and packaging comparisons run entirely in your browser. No package dimensions or shipping data are sent to any server.

DIM weight calculations use each carrier's published divisor and are mathematically precise. Actual shipping rates depend on negotiated discounts, surcharges, and zone, so use the results as estimates for comparison rather than exact quotes.

Dimensional weight is a pricing method carriers use to account for package size, not just actual weight. Large, lightweight packages are charged based on DIM weight instead of actual weight. Optimizing your packaging to reduce DIM weight can significantly lower shipping costs.
