Understanding Marketplace Fees
Every marketplace takes a cut of your sales through various fee structures. Understanding these fees is critical for pricing your products correctly and choosing the right channels for each product in your catalog.
Amazon Fees
Amazon charges a referral fee averaging 15% of the selling price (ranging from 8% to 45% depending on category). If you use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), additional fees apply for storage, pick-and-pack, and shipping. The Professional selling plan costs $39.99/month. For high-volume sellers, Amazon often provides the greatest reach but also the highest fees.
eBay Fees
eBay charges a final value fee of approximately 13% (varies by category) plus $0.30 per order. Store subscription tiers ($4.95–$2,999.95/month) provide lower insertion fees and reduced final value rates. eBay tends to be competitive for used goods, collectibles, and niche products.
Shopify Fees
Shopify does not charge a marketplace referral fee. Instead, you pay a monthly subscription ($39–$399/month) and payment processing fees (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on the Basic plan). This makes Shopify the most profitable channel on a per-unit basis for many products, but you must drive your own traffic.
Walmart Marketplace Fees
Walmart charges a referral fee averaging 8% (6–20% by category) with no monthly subscription or listing fees. Walmart's fee structure is often the most competitive among major marketplaces, and its growing ecommerce presence makes it an increasingly attractive channel for sellers.
